Shen Yun Was ‘Spectacular’ and ‘Powerful,’ Says Patron

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—From theater to theater, Shen Yun Performing Arts takes audience members through 5,000 years of heritage by transforming the stage.

Shen Yun performed from March 12 to 13 at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Missouri.

“From the music, which is my first love, to the dancing, and the choreography, everything was spectacular,” said Cale Garverick, director at Cowen Inc.

“It truly was a performance that you could tell that they spent hours, days, weeks, planning,” Mr. Garverick said, adding that he was “blown away that it changes every year.”

Iveth Jalinsky, who was on the executive governing board of the Johnson County Arts Council, said the experience was “really beautiful.”

“Oh, it’s so colorful, so beautiful, like flowers—looks like it’s spring,” said Mrs. Jalinsky, who is also a chief strategy officer at Harlan Global Manufacturing.

Steve Erickson, director of pharmacy at Cameron Regional Medical Center, said the performers were talented.

“You could see that they were putting their heart into it. Everything, they were putting into it,” Mr. Erickson said.

Shen Yun received 5 proclamations in Missouri this year.

Gov. Mike Kehoe, Sens. Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall commended Shen Yun’s mission to revive genuine traditional culture.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas and Belton Mayor Norman Larkey also wrote proclamations for the classical Chinese dance company, a New York-based nonprofit created in 2006.

Mr. Garverick, an investment banker, appreciated the costumes and the idea of “going back to traditional roots.”

He said most of the cultural elements were new to him.

“The legacy or the history behind the various regions within China—going into the southwest region with the Tibetan performers. It truly was—it was informative,” he said.

China was once known as The Divine Land, where its culture was divinely inspired. Shen Yun portrays this in its performance.

“It's something that I admire so much from the show. It just makes me look to believe in something superior, the gods,” Mrs. Jalinsky said.

“The divine being and bringing that to earth and then back to heaven—it was powerful,” Mr. Garverick said.
