Shen Yun’s Mission ‘Is Very Important,’ Says Berkeley Theatergoer

BERKELEY, Calif.—Reverend Richard McNeely, along with others, journeyed through 5,000 years of history, thanks to Shen Yun Performing Arts’ digital backdrop technology. The company performed from Jan. 10 through Jan. 12 in Berkeley, California.

“Absolutely charming. Absolutely loved it,” said Mr. McNeely. He brought his family and granddaughter. “It’s her birthday gift to the show, and she’s twelve, and she just had a ball. It was really fun,” he said.

Kay Bell, president of Salmon Bay Barge Line, described the performance as entertaining.

“I was amazed at the special effects, and it was very entertaining,” he said.

Former Air Force Officer Michael Boehm enjoyed the “3-dimensional effects of the background” along with the visuals and music.

“How the sleeves of the dancers’ gowns sort of expanded,” said Mr. Boehm.

“The orchestra was absolutely amazing, and so I loved it,” he added.

David Newton, a vice president in the supply chain technology field, said it was his first time watching Shen Yun, after wanting the opportunity to see it.

“Turns out, I clearly overshot not having come sooner. It’s really, very impressive,” said Mr. Newton.

Through myths and legends, the New York-based company’s mission is to revive the traditional, divinely inspired culture of China and share it with the world.

“It’s got to be a tough road to hold these days, but a very important one—to bring back anything ancient that’s being downtrodden these days is very important to Western civilization,” said Mr. McNeely. “We get it from the east.”

Dave Galli, CFO at Contra Costa Electric, said, “I think particularly with what’s going on in the world over the last 5 years or so that faith and the goodness that you really want in people is something that’s good about the show.”

John Sierra, sustainability commissioner at Contra Costa County, said there was “a lot of spiritual inspiration.”

“Very uplifting, and it seems like good morals in that,” he said.

“They really resonate,” said Mr. McNeely.

“They’re part of the human soul, and the performance just really demonstrates that and reaches out and grabs you by the heart. It was wonderful,” he said.
