The New York-based classical Chinese dance company, Shen Yun Performing Arts, brought a glimpse of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization to audiences in Füssen, Germany, on April 3. Many attendees said they were deeply impressed by the performance.

“The dance performance and the stage design were truly breathtaking. And the music, I've never heard so many different sounds, Western and Chinese cultures combined. It was truly impressive,” said Johanna Engelke, a scientist.

“[The performance] took me into the world of fantasy. Because the backdrop was a screen, and things were happening there. The artists went up, and they suddenly appeared on the screen and then flew away. That was very beautiful, very beautiful. It’s a beautiful idea,” said Jan Namyslo, a business consultant.

Traditional Chinese culture and values are believed to be divinely inspired. Shen Yun seeks to bring these traditions to life on stage through classical dance and music. Theatergoers appreciated the portrayal of these values and applauded the performers’ efforts.

“I must say that they do awaken us to this kind of inner devotion and awareness of the values that are important to all of us, for ourselves, but also in our interactions with others in society,” said Engelke. “Many values were conveyed. For example, kindness or helpfulness, or also the focus on oneself. A kind of spirituality, for which I think we see a great demand and hunger in the Western world.”

“That there isn't just materialism, but also other values. That there's more between heaven and earth, and everyone has their own way of expressing that. And this is a special way of making it visible, audible, and tangible. It really touched my soul,” said Josef Heine, a former psychologist.

Shen Yun will continue its tour in Germany with performances in Dortmund from April 8 to 12.
