VANCOUVER—Daniel Serruya, a business consultant, saw Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on April 8, 2026, and was delighted with the show.

Mr. Serruya lives in Ontario, in eastern Canada. He is visiting his aunt in British Columbia and accompanied her to see Shen Yun.

“We are very impressed. The precision of the movements—nobody’s out of place. It’s quite incredible to see—the scenery, the decor, the playfulness with the video in the back,” Mr. Serruya said.

Based in New York, Shen Yun’s performances carry the tagline “China before communism” and its mission is to revive the Middle Kingdom’s 5,000 years of civilization and rich traditional culture.

“I could definitely see that there was a lot of thought put into that, and [Shen Yun] is bridging gaps for people like me who have not seen it before,” Mr. Serryua said.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“The dancing is really nice, and it’s very accurate to the story itself. Understanding the story and looking at the choreography, you understand what they’re doing,” Mr. Serruya said.

Chinese literature, along with Chinese history and legend, is a rich source of inspiration for Shen Yun.
“The Monkey King—that was a very good story. A little bit of folklore in there, and mythology. That’s great,” Mr. Serruya said.
Shen Yun’s two Masters of Ceremony provide brief introductions for each piece so that those who are unfamiliar with Chinese culture can follow along.

“It’s very nice that there are people explaining each scene. It is written in the program, but I think it’s a very nice touch to have that report with the audience as they explain what we’re about to see,” Mr. Serruya expressed.

Many audience members think of China’s current regime as China’s identity. Shen Yun is a reminder that China has had a rich and elaborate history.

“I would recommend it, that’s for sure. It’s just enjoyable to learn about that aspect of Chinese culture that I didn’t know before,” Mr. Serruya said.

He encouraged Shen Yun to continue with its mission.

“Great job. Keep it up and go to as many cities as you can,” he said.

Mr. Serruya feels that Shen Yun is beneficial to today’s society.

“Very nice. It’s about humanity. It’s about inner strength, and it’s really good messages, what we need to be hearing today,” he said.
