Nicole Brener-Schmitz, a Democratic strategist and a former national political director for NARAL and Teamsters, and Tim Graham, the executive editor of NewsBusters at the Media Research Center, joined a panel discussion with NTD to assess the effectiveness of President Donald Trump’s global tariffs on the one-year anniversary of their imposition.

Brener-Schmitz discussed how tariffs can be a bipartisan issue, how they can be used to negotiate fairer trade agreements, and how lawsuits have hindered the effect of tariffs in the last year.

Graham says the president has to deal with technicalities because his opponents will figure out how to use them against him.

Brener-Schmitz says it’s important for the two parties to come together to work on trade agreements that will ensure American jobs are saved and growing and, in particular, that will help keep call centers in the United States.

The panel also discussed the potential for a budget reconciliation bill to prevent a government shutdown in the future.

Graham says the media doesn’t hold the Democrats in Congress accountable for holding up funding because of their commitment to illegal immigration, which results in dysfunctional government.
