A fire captain from Provo, Utah, his wife, and their three sons died after a flash flood tore through a red rock canyon in the southern part of the state, with the couple's daughter as the sole family survivor.
"It is believed the family fell victim to flooding caused by heavy rains," the sheriff's office said in a news release.
"We are absolutely heartbroken by the death of Captain Spencer Long and his family. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time," the fire department wrote.
According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies were first called to the campground area around 5 p.m. Friday after a report of a body discovered in a wash near the campground. The sheriff's office said search and rescue was then activated because a family group was believed missing from the area.
Two more deceased males were shortly later found in the same wash during the search. Additional victims were recovered later Friday night and into Saturday. The sheriff's office said the bodies were transported to the Utah Medical Examiner's Office for identification.
"Our hearts are with all of their loved ones as we grieve the unimaginable loss of Katrina, her husband, and their three beautiful boys," the spa wrote, adding that it would keep "their family, friends, and everyone whose lives they touched in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time".
The spa's post identified the surviving daughter as Lydia and pointed supporters toward the GoFundMe campaign established on her behalf, encouraging donations or shares of the fundraiser as a way to offer support during her loss.
Over $214,000 toward a $250,000 goal has been raised as of Monday afternoon.
