Jacksonville Jaguars two-way player Travis Hunter may have added another arrow to his quiver.
The former second overall pick plays both wide receiver and cornerback for the Jags. But at Wednesday's practice, Hunter made a 28-yard field goal during the special teams period.
2nd Overall Pick in 2025 NFL Draft
Hunter was drafted by the Jags with the second overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Colorado. He won the Heisman Trophy in his final season with the Buffaloes while playing nearly 1,400 snaps on both offense and defense. He finished the season with 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns as a wide receiver; a rushing touchdown; and 25 tackles, 11 passes defended, a forced fumble, and 4 interceptions as a cornerback.Hunter appeared in 7 games for the Jags in his rookie season but tore his lateral collateral ligament in practice midway through the season, requiring surgery. He finished the year with 28 catches for 298 yards and 1 touchdown on offense; and 15 tackles and 3 passes defended on defense.
Jaguars head coach Liam Coen gave some insights into why earlier this week.
"And so, [we] wanted to just be very intentional today about getting him some of those visual reps so [defensive passing game coordinator Mathieu Araujo] can coach him even when he's not in, he's not running over. So, we just wanted to get him a little bit more of that."
"We all know he's 3A, 3B receiver right now," he said. "And trying to get him the exposure to every [opportunity] that we have out here. But right now, a lot of the communication, a lot of the repetition needs to continue to be— obviously on both sides of the ball— but specifically on the defense where, like, all right, offensively, it's a lot of play called, go execute the play. And shoot, there's a lot of detail and fundamental and techniques that go into that, but pre- snap, post-snap on defense, there's just so much more that can go into it, especially being in unison and being in connection. And so, we're just trying to be intentional over the next couple weeks just about making sure that we're ready to go for Cleveland, and feel good about that."
