Conair, the company behind the Cuisinart brand, expanded its recall to more than 3.6 million Cuisinart grill brushes after three people sought medical treatment to remove detached bristles from their digestive tract or throat, safety officials said on Thursday.

“All Cuisinart wire bristle grill brushes are included in the recall,” according to an Aug. 27 recall notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

“Small metal wire bristles can detach from the brushes and stick to the grill or food, posing an ingestion hazard and risk of serious internal injuries that could require surgery.”

Conair expanded its July recall by about 1.9 million brushes, bringing the total to 3,625,800. The newly added products include several Cuisinart brushes and grill-cleaning tools sold as far back as June 2009, according to the CPSC.

Conair has received at least 54 reports and consumer reviews describing loose bristles coming off, including three reports of consumers who swallowed metal bristles and sought medical treatment to remove the bristles from their digestive tract or throat, according to the CPSC notice.

Consumers should stop using the brushes immediately and contact Conair for a full refund. They may also choose a Cuisinart.com credit equal to the refund amount plus an additional 20 percent. Conair will ask consumers to discard the recalled brush, the commission said.

The expansion adds 13 identified models: CGWM-024, CGWM-059, FCB-501, CGS-W18, CCB-134, CGWM-061, CB-395, CCB-3001, CGWM-077, CGWM-058, CCB-012/021, CGWM-060, and FBH-51. Eight other models were included in the original July 2 recall.

The CPSC said the recall now covers all Cuisinart wire-bristle grill brushes, including additional models sold individually or in sets before 2020. Most of the identified models have the Cuisinart name stamped on the handle, although the FCB-501 and CCB-395 do not.

Some brushes also came in Cuisinart’s 10-piece Premium Grill Set, 13-piece Wooden Handle Grill Tool Set, 14-piece Deluxe Stainless Steel Grill Set, and 20-piece Deluxe Grill Set, according to the expanded recall notice.

The Chinese-made brushes were sold at Walmart, Burlington, TJ Maxx, Ross, Amazon, and on Cuisinart’s website. They were available from June 2009 through March 2026 and cost between $8 and $20.

Consumers can submit a refund request through Conair’s recall website or call 888-520-1304 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time Monday through Friday.

"Federal law prohibits any person from selling products subject to a Commission ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the CPSC," says the CPSC. Consumers who spot a recalled brush listed for resale can report it at SaferProducts.gov. The CPSC also accepts reports of injuries, safety hazards, or defective products involving consumer items.
