An 8-year-old girl who was reportedly struck by a vehicle during the annual Fourth of July parade in Kaysville, Utah, has died from her injuries, according to the girl’s family.

The Kaysville Police Department announced in a news release on Monday that a young girl was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after she was struck by a parade vehicle, later adding that the remainder of the Kaysville City Parade would be canceled.

“This is a tragic event and our hearts go out to the child’s family,” police said.

The girl, identified as Macie Hill, was participating in the parade as part of a cheer team when she was hit by a vehicle belonging to the group.

Police immediately locked down the area around the scene of the accident for hours while investigating the apparent accident. The streets have since reopened again.

“Macie Hill, the brightest little light, was tragically taken from us in a devastating accident,” reads a GoFundMe fundraiser created to support the family with funeral expenses and other costs.

The page, organized by a neighbor of the Hill family named Jennie Dopp, described Macie as a person “full of life” who “showed joy and love to everyone.”

“Macie’s dad said she loved her Patriot Cheer team,” Dopp wrote. “She loved cheering and Macie passed away doing what she loved, being with her team.”

A witness who was watching the parade with her family and saw the tragedy unfold told FOX13 she was “in shock” and had never seen anything like that in her life.

“I glanced up and I see a little girl that was laying on the ground in that little dance company, and the trailer, the back trailer, just ran over the top of her,” Shawna Dennis told the network.

“I heard a woman screaming at the driver, stop, stop, stop, you just ran over one of your girls,” she added.

Dennis said emergency medical personnel responded to the scene within seconds and the injured girl was carried away to a nearby fire station.
