85-year-old climber dies at the base of Everest

Eighty-five-year-old Nepalese climber Min Bahadur Sherchan wanted the record as the oldest man to summit Mount Everest.

The 85-year-old Nepalese climber didn’t make it. He died of an apparent heart attack at base camp before starting the ascent.

“He was supposed to climb Mount Everest at the age of 86 year,” said Ang Tshering Sherpa, president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association. “Unfortunately he was at the base, and unfortunately he died last night. It is a great loss for the whole mountaineering community.”

Sherchan had set the record at age 76 in 2008. Japan’s Yuichiro Miura, 80, made the climb in 2013. Sherchan wanted to take it back.
