The shooting occurred near 79th Street and Troost Avenue, about four miles from Swope Soccer Village, the facility selected as England's Team Base Camp Training Site for the tournament.
England’s players have not arrived in Kansas City. The team is currently preparing in Florida, where they are due to play a friendly against Costa Rica in Orlando on Wednesday.
Police said officers responding to reports of gunfire found a large crowd dispersing from the area. Three women with gunshot wounds were located at the scene and transported to hospitals.
No suspects were in custody as of Saturday, and investigators had not publicly identified a motive or released details about what led to the shooting.
NTD reached out to the Kansas City Police Department for additional information; however, a response was not immediately received.
The station also reported disturbances involving fights, bear spray, and the recovery of a ghost gun at Lee’s Summit’s Downtown Days festival.
Kansas City is one of the host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and is expected to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors during the tournament.
Earlier this week, the city’s Board of Police Commissioners accepted a $17 million federal grant to support World Cup security planning, according to KCTV5.
Once England concludes its training camp in Florida, with a match against Costa Rica in Orlando on June 10, the team is scheduled to relocate to Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City on June 13.
England selected Kansas City as its tournament headquarters after an extensive search, the team’s website stated.
“England will be based in Kansas City, Missouri for the duration of the tournament. Swope Soccer Village will be the Three Lions’ training base with Kansas City identified as the preferred location in January 2025 following an extensive search,” it states.
Swope Soccer Village, one of Sporting Kansas City’s training facilities, is the home of the club’s MLS NEXT Pro and MLS NEXT teams. The complex, located in Kansas City’s historic Swope Park, opened in 2007 and has hosted national teams and clubs from the U.S. and other countries.
England, the 1966 World Cup champion, is ranked as number four in FIFA’s men’s rankings. The team is captained by Harry Kane and coached by Thomas Tuchel.
