Nearly 5,000 pouches of shredded cheese sold at ALDI stores in four states have been recalled after a possible metal contamination, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a recent report.

Ohio-based Great Lakes Cheese Co initiated a voluntary recall of 400 cases of Happy Farm's Colby Jack Deli Sliced Cheese, a blend of Colby & Monterey Jack finely shredded cheeses, on Feb. 15.

Each case contains 12 flexible plastic stand-up pouches.

The recall is limited to items with batch number 8679653; item number 170374; and UPC code: 4061463330840. The affected products have a best-before date of July 13, 2025, or July 14, 2025, and sold exclusively through ALDI.

The FDA listed the recall reason as “potential foreign material (stainless steel fragments),” but provided no reason for how the products were contaminated.

The affected units were sold in four states: Connecticut, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

On March 19, the FDA designated the recall as class II, its second-highest risk classification.

The food regulator defines a Class II recall as “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

The FDA did not report any known instances of health issues as a result of consumption at this moment.
