The Peruvian government denied on Aug. 5 an alleged appropriation of Colombian territory in response to statements by Colombian President Gustavo Petro regarding Santa Rosa Island in the Amazon region.

Lawmakers supporting the agreement say it adapts to the current political environment.

The Oral Criminal Court of the city of Iquique, Chile, sentenced 12 leaders of the transnational criminal organization El Tren de Aragua (TdA) on July 14 to sentences totaling 300 years in prison, including five life sentences.

'The scene is very reminiscent of the [Tren de Aragua] gang takeover that occurred last year and gained national attention,' the Aurora police chief said.
