A woman responded to a Twitter wedding challenge by posting a photo of herself at her wedding, standing next to her mother-in-law, but both are wearing white bridal wedding dresses.

Amy Pennza posted the photo in response to a Twitter post by late night comedy show host Jimmy Fallon.

“It’s Hashtags time! Tag a tweet with #WeddingFail and then tell us a funny or weird story from a wedding you were at. Could be on the show!” tweeted late night host Jimmy Fallon, on June 18.

Over 1,400 people responded to the post with stories, photos, and videos of unexpected, silly wedding happenings.

Fallon also responded to his own challenge with a short story.

“My friend got married on the beach and wanted to zip line to the altar. He didn’t test before and it turned out he was too heavy for the line. He was dragged through rocks and sand for the last 10 seconds. Ripped the pants off of his tux. #WeddingFail,” Fallon tweeted.

The Mother-in-Law’s Awkward Wedding Attire Selection

Fallon featured Pennza’s story on his Twitter account by retweeting it. Pennza explained the story behind why the mother-in-law came to her son’s wedding wearing a wedding dress in a long series of tweets.

She talked about how her mother-in-law grew up in “extreme poverty,” which formed the basis for what ultimately led her to put on the wedding dress.

“Here’s the thing: My mother-in-law is extremely frugal. And I don’t mean she just enjoys a good bargain. To understand her, you have to know where she comes from,” Pennza wrote.

“She grew up in extreme poverty. As a child, she used to sneak into the kitchen and eat match heads. That’s a pica craving, and kids do it when they’re malnourished,” she added in another tweet.

“When you grow up with nothing, it stays with you. Forever, I think. No matter how much money you earn, there’s always that little fear in the back of your mind that someone might take it all away,” she also added.

Pennza goes on to describe many example’s of how frugally her mother-in-law has conducted her affairs over the years, and how that led to the dress.

“So when she spotted The Dress at an incredible bargain, she couldn’t turn it down,” she said. As a result, there were two “brides” at the wedding. “If you ask her now, she says she feels terrible about it,” Pennza added.

No Big Deal After All

Despite the gaffe, the wedding proceeded as planned. Others at the wedding were hoping Pennza just wouldn’t notice her mother-in-law’s dress.

“I’m happy to report the wedding unfolded without bloodshed, or anyone being shoved into the champagne fountain,” tweeted Pennza.

The mother-in-law told her she still has the dress to this day, and thought of a fitting way to get rid of it.

“’I think I’ve still got it. We should raffle it off,’” Pennza quoted her mother-in-law as saying.

Apparently, Jimmy Fallon agreed with the idea, and offered a way to bring up the value that the dress would fetch.

“This is hilarious. I liked hearing the story behind it. Tell her to watch the show tonight, then raffle it off,” Fallon tweeted on June 20.
