Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Recall Announced Over Undeclared Allergens

Two flavors of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream was recalled because of an undeclared allergen.

Unilever announced the recall of Ben & Jerry’s Coconut Seven Layer Bar bulk and Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey pints, saying the flavors may inadvertently contain tree nuts including almonds, Brazil nuts, and hazelnuts that aren’t listed in the ingredient list or allergy information list.

Both affected products include a warning that they “contain walnuts” and a warning that states: “may contain other tree nuts” on the back of the pack.

“Persons who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to these undeclared tree nuts run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the recalled products,” Unilever stated.

The products were distributed across the nation; the Chunky Monkey pints were sold in retail stores while the bulk products were sold through wholesale and scoop shops.

The recall was prompted after an undeclared nut was found during the production process and the company said it has not received any reports of illness associated with the products as of yet. Unilever blamed the problem on an error from one of its nut suppliers and said that “the situation has been remedied.”

Anyone with questions can call 833-236-1237.

The affected products are as follows:

Ben & Jerry’s Coconut Seven Layer Bar bulk product, sold in a tub containing 2.4 gallons with a Consumer UPC of 076840104246 and best by date of SEP1520BJ4.

Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey pint is sold in a pint tub (473 mL) with a Consumer UPC of 076840100354 and best by dates of AUG2820BH2, AUG2920BH2, or AUG3020BH2.

Chips Ahoy Cookies Recall Announced

Some chewy Chips Ahoy cookies were recalled after the company that produces them received reports of adverse health effects.

The voluntary recall affects certain 13-ounce packages of the cookies.

The full extent of the recall wasn’t clear but Mondelez Global LLC, which owns the brand, said that the recalled products are available nationwide. According to Alden Cartwright, a Twitter user, the cookies are sold at Walmart, prompting Walmart to send an email to people about the recall.

“The voluntary recall is being conducted because of the potential for certain product to contain an unexpected solidified ingredient,” Mondelez stated in its press release (pdf). “Some reports of potential adverse health effects have been received.”

The company did not disclose which ingredient might solidify or which health effects people complained of.

The recalled cookies are in a red, 13-ounce package that says “Chips Ahoy Chewy Cookie” and has a retail UPC of 0 44000 03223 4.

The packages have one of the following “Best When Used By Dates”: 07SEP2019, 08SEP2019, 14SEP2019, 15SEP2019.

People who have the packages should throw them away. Anyone with questions can call the company from Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. EDT, at 1-844-366-1171.
