This week, the city of canals became the stage for a dazzling display of wealth, romance, and celebrity. Billionaire Jeff Bezos and television personality Lauren Sánchez celebrated their wedding with a three-day extravaganza that turned Venice into a playground for the world’s elite.
Against the backdrop of Venice’s storied architecture and shimmering waterways, Bezos and Sánchez’s nuptials unfolded with all the grandeur befitting the world’s fourth-richest man and his fiancée, who have both literally and figuratively soared to new heights.
The couple, who have traveled into space, chose one of the world’s most enchanting cities to mark their union, and expectations soared as high as their previous interstellar adventures.

The festivities began on Thursday with a reception in the Cloister of the Madonna dell’Orto, a 14th-century brick cloister attached to the church renowned for housing the remains of Renaissance painter Tintoretto.
Friday’s main event—the wedding ceremony—was staged on San Giorgio island, a site famed for its monumental complex designed by 16th-century architect Andrea Palladio. The island, once home to a Benedictine abbey, boasts manicured gardens, a private marina, and the Giorgio Cini Foundation, all providing a secluded and picturesque setting for the ceremony.
Sparkling Guest List
Venice’s airport and waterways buzzed with activity as dozens of private jets and luxury yachts delivered a parade of athletes, celebrities, influencers, and business leaders to the city.Among the celebrity guests were Oprah Winfrey, Kim Kardashian, Ivanka Trump, Tom Brady, Bill Gates, Queen Rania of Jordan, and Leonardo DiCaprio, all of whom arrived by water taxi to the delight of paparazzi and onlookers.
The city’s atmosphere recalled the 2014 wedding of George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin, when crowds lined the canals for a glimpse of the festivities. This time, however, the event was more tightly controlled, with added security and secrecy.

A Dress Fit for the Occasion
Lauren Sánchez dazzled in a mermaid-line gown crafted by Dolce & Gabbana, featuring the fashion house’s signature Italian lace and a traditional tulle-and-lace veil. Vogue magazine, which was granted exclusive access, reported that the gown took 900 hours to complete and was inspired by Sophia Loren’s wedding dress in the 1958 film "Houseboat.” The design included high-necked, hand-appliqued lace and 180 silk chiffon-covered priest buttons.Logistics of Luxury
Staging such an event in Venice, a city famous for its labyrinthine canals and aquatic transport, presented unique logistical challenges.Jack Ezon, CEO of luxury travel advisory Embark Beyond, noted that moving everything from bouquets to guests by boat at least triples the cost compared to similar events in Rome or Florence. “It’s a very tight-knit community; everyone there knows everyone, and you need to work with the right people,” Ezon said.
Veneto Governor Luca Zaia estimated the wedding’s cost at between 40 million and 48 million euros—up to $56 million—an amount more than 1,000 times the average American wedding cost of $36,000 in 2025.
Venice Reacts with Protests and Praise
Not everyone in Venice welcomed the opulent affair. About a dozen local organizations, including housing advocates and university groups, staged small protests under the banner “No Space for Bezos,” a nod to the billionaire’s space exploration company Blue Origin and Sánchez’s recent space flight.Greenpeace activists displayed a banner in St. Mark’s Square criticizing Bezos for tax practices, while others floated a mannequin resembling Bezos atop an Amazon delivery box down the Grand Canal.
“Venice is not just a pretty picture, a pretty postcard to please the needs and wants of the elite or of mass tourists, but it is an alive city, made of people who want to actually live there,” said Stella Faye, a local university researcher.

Local authorities, however, dismissed the criticism, highlighting the economic benefits and global publicity the wedding brought to Venice.
Italy’s tourism minister, Daniela Santanchè, stated, “There will be photos everywhere, social media will go wild over the bride’s dress, over the ceremony… In fact, because they will spend a lot of money, they will enrich Venice—our shopkeepers, artisans, restaurateurs, hotels. So it’s a great opportunity both for spending and for promoting Italy in the world”.
This is the second marriage for each of them.
Bezos has a net worth of $234 billion, according to Forbes.
