Blue Bell Ice Cream has initiated a voluntary recall of Moo-llennium Crunch Ice Cream half-gallon containers due to undeclared tree nuts that could potentially be fatal for consumers with allergies, according to a recall notice posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The Texas-based company is recalling a limited number of ice cream containers produced at its Brenham facility after the product was mistakenly placed in Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough packaging, the FDA announced on Aug. 22. The affected containers contain undeclared almonds, walnuts, and pecans that could trigger serious or life-threatening reactions for those with severe allergies.

A Blue Bell employee discovered the packaging error while restocking products at a retail location, finding two incorrectly packaged half-gallon containers.

No illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported, and no additional mislabeled products have been found.

The recalled ice cream can be identified by the Moo-llennium Crunch product packaged in Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough cartons with Moo-llennium Crunch lids bearing the code "061027524" on the container top.

The ice cream was distributed to 16 states and regions, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida Panhandle, Northwest Georgia, Southern Indiana, Southern Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Southwest Virginia.

The latest recall represents another ice cream packaging mishap that prompted FDA action in recent months. In early August, DFA Dairy Brands voluntarily recalled 324 cartons of Friendly's Cookies & Cream ice cream due to undeclared soy and wheat allergens, according to an Aug. 6 FDA advisory.

The Friendly's recall involved 48-ounce containers that were mistakenly placed in Vanilla Bean ice cream cartons with Cookies & Cream lids, distributed to stores in Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.

"The recalled product was mistakenly packaged in Friendly's Vanilla Bean ice cream cartons with a Cookies & Cream lid," the FDA stated earlier this month.

Food safety expert Darin Detwiler of Northeastern University explained that such recalls typically stem from supplier notifications or routine testing. "The most common situations are consumer reports of allergic reactions or noticing undeclared allergens on the ingredient list," Detwiler told NTD.

The FDA requires companies to identify nine major allergens in their products, including milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame.

A separate recall in June affected 6,668 cases of Breyers Chocolate Truffle cartons containing Rocky Road ice cream with undeclared allergens.

Consumers who purchased the recalled Blue Bell products can return them to their place of purchase for full refunds. The company has established a consumer hotline at 979-836-7977, available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST, and accepts inquiries via email at [email protected].
