Eugene Mirman, the comedian and actor best known as the voice of Gene Belcher on Fox's animated series "Bob's Burgers," was seriously injured Tuesday in a car crash.

Authorities said his vehicle crashed into a toll plaza in Bedford, New Hampshire, and caught fire—and a state trooper risked his life to drag him to safety.

The crash occurred at 11:55 a.m. at the Bedford Toll Plaza on the F.E. Everett Turnpike, according to New Hampshire State Police.

Mirman, 51, of Massachusetts, was the only occupant of a 2026 Lucid Gravity when the vehicle struck the plaza's concrete structure and erupted in flames. Emergency dispatchers received 911 calls reporting the fire and that someone appeared to be trapped inside.

A veteran state trooper assigned to Gov. Kelly Ayotte's security detail happened upon the scene while units were still en route. The trooper spotted the burning vehicle and, seeing Mirman still inside, pulled him out through a window without hesitation. New Hampshire State Police Col. Mark B. Hall praised the trooper's actions at the scene.

"Certainly, their actions were heroic in what they did," Hall said. "Without hesitation, they put themselves in danger to render aid to someone who was in need of it."

Ayotte herself was present during the rescue. According to Boston television station WCVB, an ABC-affiliated station, Hall said the governor exited her vehicle, grabbed a fire extinguisher, and tried to help however she could.

"She wasn't in harm's way at any point, but she has a great deal of care for our citizens and tried to do what she could at the scene to provide assistance," Hall said. Several bystanders who had stopped at the scene also helped the trooper pull Mirman from the wreckage.

"I want to thank the Trooper on my security detail and the bystanders who stepped up to help at the scene of the crash for their brave lifesaving efforts today," Ayotte posted on X on the same day. "Joe and I are praying for the full recovery of the driver who was injured today."

Mirman was transported by ambulance to Elliot Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

A representative for the actor confirmed the crash in a statement shared with media outlets.

"Eugene was in a very scary car accident," the representative said. "He wants to thank the bystanders, state police, first responders and hospital staff who saved him. He is grateful to be on the mend. At this time, we kindly ask for privacy for Eugene and his family as he focuses on recovering from his injuries."

The trooper's name has not been released by police due to the nature of their assignment.

No charges have been filed, and the crash remains under investigation.

Mirman, who immigrated from Moscow with his family at age 4 and grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts, has built a long career in comedy and television, according to his official biography.
In addition to voicing Gene Belcher on the Emmy Award-winning "Bob's Burgers," he has appeared on HBO's "Flight of the Conchords," Adult Swim's "Delocated," "Archer," "Broad City," and "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver," among many others. He made his animated big-screen debut in "The Bob's Burgers Movie" and co-founded the comedy production company Pretty Good Friends.
