An unidentified body matching the clothing description of a missing Lexington, South Carolina, woman was found Wednesday afternoon after a community tip led authorities to a wooded area near her last known location, law enforcement officials said.
The body was discovered at about 2:48 p.m. on June 17 during a search near North Lake Drive and Old Cherokee Road, Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green said at a news conference.

The search began earlier that afternoon after police received information that missing 39-year-old Elena Katherine Moore had been seen in the area on June 11.

Authorities have not positively identified the body. Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said the deceased is a woman whose clothing matches Moore's description, but identification has not been confirmed.

"No positive identification has been made as of this time," Fisher said in a statement on June 17. "No cause of death has been determined."

Fisher said that an autopsy is expected to be scheduled in the coming days. “This process will take time, so thank you for your patience as we work to positively identify this person,” she said.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has been asked to conduct the death investigation. Authorities have not said whether foul play is suspected.

The discovery came nearly a week after Moore was reported missing. Police said she was last seen June 11 after leaving a Planet Fitness on Whiteford Way in Lexington.

Investigators said Moore signed into the gym at about 6:40 p.m. that evening. She was seen walking toward a wooded area behind nearby businesses, including a Lowe's Home Improvement store, authorities said.

Multiple searches were conducted in the days after her disappearance. On June 15, officers and emergency personnel searched wooded areas along Caughman Farm Lane behind Planet Fitness and Lowe's.

Police said those efforts, including drone operations and help from multiple agencies, produced no evidence related to Moore's whereabouts.

Authorities also addressed misinformation that circulated during the investigation. On June 15, Lexington police said reports claiming Moore had been found were false and apologized for the confusion.

Before Wednesday's discovery, police described Moore as a white woman, 5 feet 7 inches tall and about 120 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. Investigators said there was no known vehicle connected to her disappearance, and it was unclear whether she had her cellphone.

Moore worked as a personal trainer in Lexington and maintained an online presence focused on fitness coaching and workout instruction. Police said she regularly visited the Planet Fitness location where she was last seen.

Moore's husband, Brannon Slice, is a private investigator and previously worked for the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department for 14 years. Slice reported Moore missing on June 12, according to Lexington Police Department investigator Missy Silcox, as reported by WSAZ.

Green credited public assistance and media coverage for generating leads during the investigation. The Lexington Police Department said investigators received hundreds of tips from community members that helped advance the case.
