A Cheyenne, Wyoming, company has voluntarily recalled its supplements that had been distributed nationwide due to salmonella concerns.
Optimal Carnivore announced on its website on April 15 that it was recalling Bone & Joint Restore Dietary Supplement (Lot No. 1224064).
“Supplement or medical recalls tend to be associated with chemical contaminations, improper labeling, or adulteration,” Mendocino Food Consulting founder Bryan Quoc Le told NTD in an email.
WebMD defines salmonella as a bacterium that causes diarrhea, a fever, upset stomach, and cramping and can cause infection through contaminated food items or touching an animal that has it.
The lot of alleged contaminated supplements were shipped between Feb. 1 and April 9, according to Moriarty.
“In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis,” Moriarty said.
“Level 1 recalls are done out of an abundance of caution,” Quoc Le said. “Other recall classifications are more associated with temporary illness or minor effects on health.”
On Amazon.com, where the brand is sold, Bone & Joint Restore supplements are associated with inflammation relief, immune support, youthful skin, hair, and nails, as well as strong, healthy bones, strong joints, and connective tissue.
“With good traceback, likely all of the bottles of the supplement will be removed from the shelf,” Quoc Le added. “Since there were few bottles contaminated in this recall, there is a low probability that the situation will lead to death or hospitalization.”
Moriarty wrote on the company website that there had been no health-related complaints so far.
"Please examine the product you received from us to determine if it is subject to this recall," Moriarty said to consumers. "If your product is not from a lot subject to this recall, then there is nothing that needs to be done and you can continue to enjoy your product. We have not received any illness complaints to date."
