The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on May 18 that it has created a $1.7 billion fund to compensate people who believe they have been victims of “weaponization and lawfare.”

The fund was established as part of a settlement agreement in a case President Donald Trump brought against the IRS after the tax returns of the president and others were leaked.

The settlement states that Trump, his sons, and the Trump Organization will receive an apology but no financial recompense.

The settlement also outlines the new fund, which will be empowered to issue formal apologies and money to people who file claims.

“The machinery of government should never be weaponized against any American, and it is this Department’s intention to make right the wrongs that were previously done while ensuring this never happens again,” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement. “As part of this settlement, we are setting up a lawful process for victims of lawfare and weaponization to be heard and seek redress.”

This is a breaking story that will be updated.
