The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall this week of 94 cases of a popular cheddar puff sold in three states.
“The recall was initiated following two complaints of allergic reactions to related products sold in Canada,” federal officials said. “The root cause has been found to be an ingredient at the supplier level of seasoning that contains the allergen.”
The plant-based snack item was sold at Earth Fare stores in Florida and South Carolina, at PCC Markets in Washington state and select independent retailers in the regions.

For the majority of consumers, eating cheddar puffs that contain undisclosed milk is unremarkable.
However, those with a milk allergy may have a reaction, which raises the stakes of eating them.
There are nine major food allergens that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires all companies to identify in their products. In addition to milk, they include eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame.

Last month, the FDA classified more than half a million bags of recalled Zapp's and Dirty brand potato chips at its highest risk level due to possible Salmonella contamination.
The Pennsylvania-based subsidiary of Utz Brands, Inc. said affected seasoning batches had tested negative for Salmonella, noting that limited varieties of the potato chips had been pulled "out of an abundance of caution."
