A recall of several popular freeze-dried pet treats under the brands Raw Dog Barkery, BellePepper Cats, and Kanu Pets by Foodynamics has been issued after routine testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USDA) revealed potential Salmonella contamination, the company announced Thursday.

The Wisconsin-based manufacturer said the recall affects packages of chicken heart treats distributed to retailers in Wisconsin, New York, and Florida.

Foodynamics says the recall was for salmonella found in seven different packages of freeze-dried pet treats shipped from its Wales facility. These products are Raw Dog Barkery Whole and Sliced Chicken Hearts, BellePepper Cats Freeze Dried Chicken Heart Slices, and Kanu Pets Freeze Dried Chicken Heart Raw Treats.

"Do not feed the recalled product to pets or any other animals. The product should be disposed of in a way that children, pets, and wildlife cannot access it," warns the recall notice. "Do not sell or donate the recalled products. Wash and sanitize pet food bowls, cups, and storage containers," adding a reminder to "Always ensure you wash and sanitize your hands after handling recalled food along with any utensils and surfaces that come in contact with recalled food or treats."

The affected items carry “Use By” or Lot numbers 030527, 040217, 031627, 121426, and 011526, printed on stickers located on the back of each package.

The company stated it traced its product distribution within hours of initiating the recall and has notified retailers and customers. “No adverse health effects have been reported in pets or humans to date,” Foodynamics said.

Salmonella contamination poses risks not only to animals but also to humans handling the affected products. The FDA warns that people infected with Salmonella may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever, and that, in rare cases, more severe complications such as arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, or urinary symptoms can occur.

Pets with Salmonella might seem tired or have diarrhea, vomiting, fever, or eat less than usual. Even pets that look healthy can spread the bacteria to other animals or people.

The recalled treats were sold at SimplyDried Treats, Magpies Gourmet Dog Treats, and What’s In the Bowl Delafield in Wisconsin, a retailer in New York with BellePepper Cats products, and a Florida store selling Kanu Pets treats.

Foodynamics says it is working closely with federal investigators. The company stopped making and shipping the affected treats after the FDA found Salmonella, and is helping regulators find out how the contamination happened.

Retailers have been instructed to quarantine all recalled stock and will receive full refunds. Consumers are also entitled to a refund at their original place of purchase.
