Hunter Dies After Being Shot by Another Hunter

A hunter from Georgia died after being shot by another hunter who thought that he was a deer on Sept. 28, according to multiple reports.

In a press release from the Glynn County Police Department, the shooting happened in a wooded area of 578 Myers Holl Road. Police stated that they met the hunters at a gas station, located at the Friendly Express on Highway 82 and 303 after the incident.

According to Fox News, a group of hunters gathered at Myers Hills area to hunt on that day. The news outlet reported the area that the group was hunting in was located near Brunswick, Georgia. As stated in the press release, two of the members of the group were the victim, Bobby Lane, a 17-year-old boy, and the person who mistakenly shot Lane, Hector Romero. In the press release, it was stated that the two knew each other.

The Brunswick News wrote that the incident was reported to the police around 6:58 p.m.

During the hunt, Lane went into a heavily-foliaged area, and he was then allegedly mistaken for a deer, according to the press release. Hector, mistakenly shot Lane, then realizing his mistake drove the injured 17-year-old fellow hunter to the nearby gas station. From there Lane was transported immediately by ambulance to a medical facility by first-responders on the scene.

According to the Brunswick News, Lane was taken to the Southeast Georgia Health System’s Brunswick hospital.

However, after some time after being transported to the hospital, Lane succumbed to his injuries and died, according to Action News Jax.

Glynn County Police said that Lane had been shot by a rifle, according to Action News Jax. According to the Georgia Wild Life hunting season dates, the time between the months of September and January is considered bow or archery season. The firearms season according to the season dates, does not begin until October 19. The firearm season lasts until January 12, along with the archery season.

The Glynn County Police Department stated that the area where Lane was shot has been secured and that the Georgia Department of Natural Resources has been asked to conduct a full investigation alongside the Glynn County Investigators. As of this time, not much else is known, as the investigation is still being conducted.

When the investigation concludes, more information will be released to the public, according to the Glynn County Police Department press release. A GoFundMe Page had been set up for the 17-year-old hunter in order to pay for funerary expenses.
