Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer asking Pennsylvania authorities not to release an illegal immigrant trucker accused of killing a Pennsylvania State Police trooper.
The driver has been identified as 33-year-old Michael Bon, a Haitian national living in Brockton, Massachusetts.
In July 2024, Bon was released into the United States by the Biden administration, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In October 2024, Bon filed an application for Temporary Protected Status, but it was never granted to him. DHS said that Bon was issued a commercial driver’s license by the state of Massachusetts.
NTD reached out to the Pennsylvania State Police and Gov. Josh Shapiro’s office seeking comment on whether officials would honor the ICE detainer but did not receive a response by publication.
The July 1 crash occurred in Schuylkill County, where the semi-truck that Bon was driving struck Pennsylvania State Trooper Michael Pahira as he was inspecting another commercial vehicle.
Pahira, a 20-year veteran of the police force, later died from his injuries.
Pahira enlisted in the Pennsylvania State Police in January of 2007 and was assigned as a Motor Carrier Inspector.
Transportation Secretary Scott Duffy said Pahira was also the caretaker for his cancer-stricken mother.
Sen. Dave McCormick (R-Pa.) also paid tribute to the slain trooper.
“PA is grieving the loss of Trooper Michael Pahira,” McCormick wrote on X. “He served with honor, cared for his mom during her cancer battle, and should be with his family today. We owe it to Trooper Pahira and every law enforcement officer to enforce our immigration laws and protect those who protect us.”
