Carter’s Funeral Service Held at Washington National Cathedral

A state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter, who died on Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 100, is held on Jan. 9 at the Washington National Cathedral. President Joe Biden, who will eulogize Carter at the funeral, has directed that Jan. 9 be a national day of mourning. After the funeral service, Carter's remains will travel back to his hometown of Plains, Georgia, for a private funeral service and interment at the Carter residence. Prior to interment, the U.S. Navy will conduct a missing man formation flyover to honor Carter’s service in the Navy and his time as commander-in-chief.

Hearse drives to Joint Base Andrews 11:45 a.m. ET - Casket placed aboard Special Air Mission 39 2:00 p.m. ET - Casket arrives at Lawson Army Airfield at Fort Moore, Georgia 3:30 p.m. ET - Hearse arrives at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia 3:45 p.m. ET - Private funeral service 4:45 p.m. ET - Hearse drives through Plains and stops briefly at the Carter residence 5:20 p.m. ET - Private internment ceremony
