Spoelstra was en route home when the fire started. The Heat returned to Miami at 5:11 a.m. after playing and losing 122‑112 to the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night. Spoelstra arrived home shortly after the team's charter flight landed and was seen walking around the property as crews battled the flames. Drone footage showed that much of the house had been reduced to charred rubble.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) Battalion Chief Victoria Byrd, who served as incident commander, said in a press release video sent to NTD that at 4:30 a.m. MDFR received a report of a residential house fire. Along with the 20 units dispatched, the MDFR also sent a hazardous materials response team to handle the fire.
“There are no reported injuries, and the home was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation,” stated the MDFR.
Byrd reported that crews encountered flames reaching the height of nearby trees and deployed both aerial equipment and fire engines to battle the blaze. She explained that access was challenging due to a privacy wall and dense tree cover, leaving only a single entry point. Byrd stated that the firefighters successfully extinguished the fire and prevented damage to surrounding homes.
Smoke was still seen rising over parts of the property more than three hours after the first fire trucks arrived, but officials declared the blaze contained around that time. Some crews remained on the scene through early Thursday afternoon.
Spoelstra, in his 18th season as Heat head coach, has guided Miami to three NBA championships. He recently finalized a deal to serve as coach of the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. The Heat is also scheduled to host the Charlotte Hornets on Friday night.

Erik Spoelstra and his ex-wife, Nikki Spoelstra, have three children together, all under the age of 6: sons Santiago and Dante, and daughter Ruby. The couple announced their divorce in November 2023 after several years of marriage. Nikki, a former Miami Heat cheerleader and television host, lives separately in the family's previous home.
According to Miami-Dade County property records, the residence was built in 1985. The Miami-Dade property is estimated to be worth approximately $5.5 million according to county records.
