Officials have released new details about James Handy's death a little over a week after the "Jumanji" and "Top Gun: Maverick" actor was fatally stabbed outside a home in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles.
Police were dispatched to the home—where Handy's longtime girlfriend, Wendy Gledhill, lived—around 9:30 a.m. after receiving a report of "unknown trouble."
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found the actor in the front yard of the residence suffering from a stab wound to the chest. He was subsequently taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The LAPD said the person who initially called 911 told dispatchers that he was "the son of man" and that he had "just killed the man of sin." The suspect—identified as Wendy Gledhill's 44-year-old son, Michael Gledhill, who also lived at the home—flagged down police and told them "he was the one they were looking for," officials said.
Wendy Gledhill told the Daily Mail that Handy had gone out to fetch the newspaper around 9 a.m. on the morning of his death but never returned.
"They said someone had called 911 and they told me someone was wrapped in a blanket outside the house," she added.
"This is not how anyone’s life should end, stabbed in the chest and left dying in the front yard of a home," District Attorney Nathan Hochman shared.
"The victim, James Handy, deserved to live out his later years enjoying what he had worked so hard for and enjoying it with those he loved and cared about. Like all murder victims, his life mattered and the person who inexplicably and violently took it must be held accountable for his actions."
