More than 30 people were injured after a Maryland transit bus crashed into a building just outside of Baltimore on Wednesday, authorities said.

According to a press release from the Baltimore County Police Department, the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus was traveling southbound on Reisterstown Road in Pikesville shortly before 6 p.m. when it struck several vehicles, lost control, and slammed into a FedEx building at the corner of Old Court Road and Reisterstown Road in Pikesville.

The bus driver suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to an area hospital. Officials said 35 others were also transported to local hospitals following the crash, though it is unclear how many were bus passengers, occupants of other vehicles, or pedestrians. An update on the current conditions of the victims has not yet been released.

A dozen vehicles were involved in the crash, which prompted a second-alarm mass casualty response, with a Medevac helicopter and Shock Trauma GoTeam requested, the Baltimore County Fire Department shared. More than 100 first responders and 15 ambulances also responded to the scene.

Fire officials said two people had to be extricated following the collision, including one person who was trapped inside the MTA bus and another who was trapped inside a car.

Authorities have not shared any additional details about what may have led up to the crash but noted that the circumstances surrounding the incident were still under investigation. NTD reached out to the MTA for more information, but a response was not received by publication time.

Downed power lines were reported, and extended road closures were expected as emergency crews continued working the scene.

In images of the accident shared online, the front of the bus can be seen lodged into the side of the FedEx building, with glass and other debris scattered on the ground. A line of vehicles also showed significant damage along Reisterstown Road, with some appearing to have rear-end damage and one vehicle that had overturned.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore addressed the multi-vehicle crash in a Facebook post Wednesday, writing that his administration was "closely monitoring the situation." He added that he and his wife, Dawn, were keeping those affected by the incident in their hearts and prayers.

"We are deeply grateful for our first responders who acted with speed and skill to ensure the safety of our neighbors," Moore said. "We’ve been in close coordination with local officials to provide any support needed on the ground."
