Christine Pelosi has officially announced she will run for California State Senate, putting to bed talk of her vying for the congressional seat long held by her mother, Nancy Pelosi.
The younger Pelosi launched her campaign in a video on social media on Monday.
"What do we do when our freedoms are under attack? We speak up, we fight back and we organize. Power for the people," Pelosi said in the video.
Christine Pelosi's announcement comes after her mother revealed she will not be running for reelection after nearly four decades in Congress, kicking off a wide-open contest to replace the longtime California congresswoman and prominent Democrat.
The 85-year-old Pelosi has been facing pressure for years to make room for a younger generation of Democrats.
In a video posted to social media announcing her decision to retire, she said: "As we go forward, my message to the city I love is this: San Francisco, know your power.”
Speculation has been swirling about who will replace Pelosi in the 11th congressional district.
Pelosi, 59, has worked as a prosecutor in San Francisco, special counsel in the Clinton-Gore administration, and chief of staff on Capitol Hill.
She has also served as a women’s rights advocate, political strategist, and chair of the Women’s Caucus of the California Democratic Primary.
“In courtrooms, campaigns and corridors of power, I’ve fought to build Power For The People. And that’s why I’m running for California Senate,” Christine Pelosi wrote on X.
The seat in the California Senate isn’t open until 2028 but could be up for grabs sooner as state Sen. Scott Wiener announced he’s running for Nancy Pelosi’s congressional seat in 2026.
If Wiener wins that race, Christine Pelosi would run for the state Senate seat in a special election that year. If Wiener doesn’t win the congressional seat, Pelosi would run for Wiener’s seat in 2028 since he’s term-limited.
