Level crossings can be dangerous.

The Dutch Rail Agency, ProRail, highlights the dangers of level crossings with a near-miss video.

The video shows an “unguarded” level crossing. Although the cyclist in the video stopped before walking onto the level crossing, the cyclist still almost got hit by a speeding train.

In the YouTube video description, ProRail warns of the danger of unguarded level crossings and voices its preference of ending them. However, this contradicts the opinions of many local residents and municipalities that are in favor of keeping them. They feel the crossings are important and believe they can take care of themselves.

So far this year, three people were killed while using level crossings. The most recent death was a 47-year-old man on Nov. 17, according to ProRail.

The incident shown in the video happened in the southern city of Geleen, in the Netherlands.

According to its website, ProRail is the agency responsible for the railway network in the Netherlands, including construction, maintenance, management, and safety.
