While there are plenty of returning shows to look forward to this January, the networks and streamers continue to add new original content to their platforms.
Some of the shows presenting new seasons include “Will Trent” (Season 4, Jan. 6, 8 p.m. ET, ABC), “The Rookie” (Season 8, Jan. 26, 10 p.m. ET, ABC), “The Pitt” (Season 2, Jan. 8, HBO), “The Traitors” (Season 4, Jan. 8, Peacock), “The Night Manager” (Season 2, Jan. 11, Prime Video), and “Shrinking” (Season 3, Jan. 28, Apple TV).
However, there is something for everyone in the batch of fresh series available in January. Get your popcorn and favorite viewing partners for binging.
1. “Run Away”: In the latest adaption of a bestselling Harlan Coben mystery thriller, Simon, a desperate father, (James Nesbitt) goes in search of his missing, drug-addicted daughter, Paige (Ellie de Lange), finding himself at odds with his pediatrician wife (Minnie Driver), who wants to let her hit rock bottom. As always in a Coben adventure, there will be plot twists and suspense around every corner. When you finish the eight-episode limited series, you can keep binging with the growing collection of Coben titles, such as “Missing You” and “Fool Me Once.” Streams Jan. 1 on Netflix.
2. “Best Medicine”: If you like your doctor shows with a dose of comedy, try this one-hour series based on the British medical dramedy “Doc Martin.” The show features actor Josh Charles as brilliant surgeon Dr. Martin Best, who abruptly leaves his illustrious career in Boston to become a general practitioner in the quaint East Coast fishing village where he spent summers as a child. The likable cast of familiar television faces also includes Abigail Spencer as local teacher Louisa Glasson and Annie Potts as Martin’s Aunt Joan, an unrelenting lobster woman who never misses a day on the water. Debuts Jan. 4 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox and streams on Hulu Jan. 5.
3. “Star Search”: TV watchers of a certain age have fond memories of this ’80s classic TV talent show. The reboot brings us Anthony Anderson as the host with the most. The original “Star Search” featured young talent like Beyoncé, LeAnn Rimes, Ray Romano, Adam Sandler, Britney Spears, and Justin Timberlake (credited as Justin Randall) in the early days of their careers. Kicks off Jan. 13 and will air live on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on Netflix with live fan voting.
4. “Suddenly Amish”: This reality show follows six non-Amish individuals looking for a deep change in their lives as they leave the modern world behind to venture into a deeply traditional Amish community in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. A progressive group of Amish hosts and community members are taking a new approach to help grow their shrinking population in a place where it’s very rare to allow outsiders in. Each “Suddenly Amish” participant must consider what it would mean to convert into Amish society, as they navigate a drastically different lifestyle in a culture defined by faith, discipline, simplicity, and community. Debuts Jan. 13 on TLC.
5. “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy”: The “Star Trek” franchise enters uncharted territory as it heads into the young adult world with its latest adventure, set at the end of the “Star Trek” timeline. “Starfleet Academy” follows the first class of young recruits in nearly a century after a cataclysmic event, charting their growth as the next Starfleet cadets who also are dealing with the trials and tribulations that dominate young people’s lives. The series will star Paul Giamatti, Holly Hunter, and Robert Picardo. Debuts Jan. 15 on Paramount+.
6. “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”: A prequel to “Game of Thrones,” and technically, a sequel to “House of the Dragon,” “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” follows the adventures of the hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall (“Dunk”) and his squire, Egg (secretly Prince Aegon V Targaryen), about 90 years before the main series. The six-episode series is based on novellas by George R.R. Martin titled “Tales of Dunk and Egg.” Debuts Jan. 18 at 10 p.m. ET, HBO; also streaming on HBO Max.
7. “Steal”: In this make-you-think thriller about the heist of the century and the ordinary office worker, Zara (Sophie Turner), along with her best friend Luke (Archie Madekwe), finds herself suddenly and shockingly at the heart of it as their routine day at Lochmill Capital—a pension fund investment company—spirals into chaos when thieves storm in with a shocking demand. The series charts the fallout from the violent robbery over six action-packed episodes. The series also stars Jacob Fortune-Lloyd. Streaming on Prime Video, Jan. 21.
8. “The Beauty”: This is another original series from Emmy, Golden Globe, Tony, and Peabody Award-winning producer Ryan Murphy with a star-studded cast of regular and guest actors, including Billy Eichner, Peter Gallagher, Bella Hadid, Rebecca Hall, Ashton Kutcher, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ben Platt, Jeremy Pope, Isabella Rossellini, and Meghan Trainor. Based on the comic books by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley, the sci-fi series is about an STD that makes those affected beautiful. But the disease, dubbed “the beauty,” eventually kills its hosts as part of a suspected sinister government plot. The show boasts location settings like Venice, Rome, and Paris. The first three episodes will premiere on Jan. 21 at 9 p.m. ET on FX and Hulu (and Disney+ for international streamers).
