Christy Knowings, a comedian and actress known for her role on Nickelodeon’s “All That,” has died after suffering an asthma attack. She was 46.
Knowings’ aunt, Tyleah Joseph, announced her death on Aug. 12 in a Facebook post.
“My brother Charles daughter Chrissy [Christy Knowings] has passed,” Joseph wrote. She said that Knowings played on Nickelodeon. “She was a outstanding actress, comedian, twin sister an amazing daughter; to her mum dad and brother Chris Knowings from Spike Lee’s [Crooklyn] and Sesame Street,” she said.
Her manager, Al Hill, separately confirmed her death to Variety. “Christy was a multi-talented lady. Whether it was singing, acting, dancing, she was always creating. Always professional and dedicated to her work,” Hill said.
“Man this one hit hard!!! Rest well Christy!!! Never could have imagined this day!! Sending so much love to her family!! She was a real one and one of the funniest people out here!!! Gonna miss you buddy!!! Show @christyknowings some love y’all!!!” Thompson wrote.
Knowings died late Aug. 11 at a hospital in the Los Angeles area, according to TMZ. She had been hospitalized Aug. 7 after the asthma attack left her with brain damage. She was placed on life support before her family decided to withdraw it on Aug. 11.
She was born on Feb. 25, 1980, in the Bronx, New York. Knowings began her television career with a 1994 appearance as Larrina on “New York Undercover,” according to her IMDb credits.
She joined “All That” in 1997 and appeared in 32 episodes over three seasons.
“All That” was a Nickelodeon sketch-comedy series for children and teenagers. Often compared to a younger version of “Saturday Night Live,” it featured comedy sketches, recurring characters and musical guests. The original series ran from 1994 to 2005, followed by a revival that aired from 2019 to 2020.
Knowings' characters included Jessica in the recurring “Whateverrr!!!” sketches alongside with Amanda Bynes. Knowings also played Penny Lane, Brenda Stone, and Gloria Bankhead during her time on the children’s sketch-comedy series.
Knowings later appeared as Christy in three episodes of “Sesame Street” from 2008 to 2011 alongside her twin brother, actor Chris Knowings. Her brother has played Chris Robinson on the children’s program.
Her musical work included writing and performing “Being” for the 2009 drama “Mother and Child,” according to the film’s soundtrack credits. She also released the folk single “To the World” in 2020.
