An attacker will commonly make physical contact to injure someone’s body structure, or they will employ poison to hurt someone’s body chemistry, says Dr. Jingduan Yang M.D.

But to hurt someone energetically, you just need to insult them, glare at them, or yell at them, because those actions can block the person’s energy flow, he says, pointing to deeper layers of human vulnerability.

An American psychiatrist and doctor of traditional Chinese medicine, Yang views and treats depression from a multidimensional standpoint, encompassing the body’s anatomical, chemical (or biochemical), energetic, and spiritual components—also known as the ACES model.

On “Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon,” he illuminates a concept of energy flow that spans both metabolic energy and the qi energy targeted in acupuncture.

What is energy-flow disruption? How does it affect mental health, and how is it remedied?

Yang relays the story of a patient at high risk of stroke due to elevated blood pressure, and who also suffered from Bell’s Palsy—muscle weakness in one side of the face that causes it to droop.

Bell’s Palsy is often attributed to viral infection, yet from an ACES standpoint, Yang identified deeper factors behind the man’s condition—and a matching treatment strategy.

“We start with psycho-energetic therapy, where we work on his emotional status and desensitize him … to situations where he would be triggered and become angry.”

“In Chinese we say, ‘You’re so angry it twisted your face,’” Yang adds, alluding to the emotional factors that were at play.

How do emotions like anger relate to the body’s organ systems, like the paired liver and bladder system, and how are they understood in TCM?

How do our interpersonal relations and our body’s energy flow influence one another?

On “Vital Signs,” Yang connects the dots between how we live and relate to others, the flow of energy through our bodies, and our states of physical and mental health.
