China sentenced a former official to death in a record bribery case. Yang Youlin was accused of taking more than $300 million in bribes—equivalent to about $25,000 a day.

Yang served as executive deputy director of the Nanjing Economic and Technological Development Zone. While it's not a particularly high-ranking position—roughly comparable to a deputy director of economic development for a U.S. city—it gave him influence over construction contracts, land transfers, and financing. That influence allegedly allowed him to collect millions in bribes.

Yang also has a strong U.S. connection. In 2001, his wife and daughter obtained U.S. citizenship. This reflects a pattern seen among some Chinese officials: they remain in China while their spouses and children move abroad, often to hold assets overseas. There is no public evidence showing how Yang's daughter obtained U.S. citizenship. However, some Chinese officials have benefited from birthright citizenship by having children born in the United States.

Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling related to birthright citizenship. Around the same time, President Donald Trump congratulated China's leader, Xi Jinping, on a separate matter.
