Trump on Friday night announced a new partnership between U.S. Steel and Japanese steelmaker Nippon Steel. He said the deal would keep U.S. Steel’s headquarters in Pittsburgh, create at least 70,000 jobs, and contribute $14 billion to the U.S. economy.

Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed cases of a new COVID-19 variant linked to rising infections in parts of Asia. A report from the University of Minnesota identifies the NB.1.8.1 variant as a key factor behind recent surges in those regions.
