A shift in the polar vortex is poised to deliver three consecutive blasts of bone-chilling Arctic air to the central and eastern United States over the next two weeks. The blast will bring dangerously low temperatures and multiple rounds of accumulating snow just as winter gets underway.

The frigid pattern comes on the heels of the Northeast's first major <a href="https://www.ntd.com/northeast-prepares-for-first-major-snowstorm-of-season_1111220.html">winter storm</a>, which dumped up to 10 inches of snow across parts of New England earlier this week and set records in Chicago.

Now, with the polar vortex repositioning itself near Hudson Bay, Canada, meteorologists warn that the coldest air of the season so far is barreling toward millions of Americans, according to <a href="https://www.accuweather.com/en/winter-weather/polar-vortex-to-bring-triple-whammy-of-arctic-cold-to-us-through-mid-december/1840203">AccuWeather</a>.

"These Arctic air outbreaks can be attributed to a displacement of the polar vortex," said Paul Pastelok, AccuWeather's lead long-range meteorologist. "The outbreak this week will be the first of probably three such rounds with it. Another cold blast is likely next week and a third the week after that."

Pastelok warned that "the waves of Arctic air will lead to significant surges in energy demands," putting pressure on heating systems across the affected regions.

Subzero temperatures are expected to grip the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska, while early Thursday morning readings already ranged from below zero to the single digits across much of the northern Plains and Upper Midwest.

For the Northeast, a frigid Thursday night and Friday morning await residents from the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes through New England. Traditional cold spots in the interior Northeast could plummet well below zero by Friday morning, with temperatures in the Adirondacks of northeast New York potentially dropping to near 20 below zero.

Major cities won't escape the chill either. Boston is expected to see temperatures fall deep into the teens by Friday morning, while residents from New York City to Washington, D.C., will experience widespread lows in the 20s.

Making matters worse, gusty winds will make the cold feel even more brutal. AccuWeather RealFeel temperatures could register 10 to 25 degrees lower than actual readings in windy areas, potentially challenging some daily record lows.

The first front sweeping off the Northeast coast Thursday night is expected to bring flurries, snow showers, and heavier squalls across New York state and New England.

This weekend, a fresh batch of Arctic air will contribute to a new swath of snow stretching from the northern Plains to the Midwest, blanketing areas that received moderate to heavy snow just a week earlier.

The western edge of the Arctic air mass is also partly driving a southward-moving snowstorm over the Rockies from Wyoming and Colorado to northern New Mexico.

The timing couldn't be more challenging for areas still digging out from this week's earlier snowfall. More than 8 inches fell at Chicago O'Hare International Airport over the weekend, setting a record for the highest single calendar day snowfall in November at the airport. The previous record had stood since 1951.

Schools and government offices across the Northeast closed due to dangerous road conditions during Tuesday's storm, while numerous accidents were reported in Ohio, where 3 to 5 inches of snow coated southern parts of the state.

Pennsylvania activated its winter operations in force, with more than 600 equipment operators and safety workers clearing the turnpike system's 2,900 miles of lanes.

Officials are urging those who have not winterized their homes and water lines, had furnaces inspected, or ordered heating oil or propane should do so as soon as possible.

Travelers should brace for potential delays on highways and at airports. Schools may face delays, early dismissals, or cancellations as the pattern unfolds.

For ski enthusiasts, there's a silver lining: resorts that haven't received significant natural snow are expected to ramp up snowmaking operations to prepare for the season.

The Southeast may get a brief reprieve, as breezy conditions and patchy clouds could keep temperatures above the season's lowest readings for parts of the region, especially the Florida Peninsula, until next week. However, rounds of cold weather will still bring the risk of hard freezes to interior Southeastern states, according to AccuWeather’s report.
