Sinclair Broadcast Group said Monday it will continue preempting "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" across its ABC affiliate stations when the show returns Tuesday, replacing it with news programming while discussions with the network continue.

The telecommunications company made the announcement on social media as Walt Disney Company confirmed Kimmel's late-night program would resume after a suspension that began last week, following controversial comments about conservative commentator Charlie Kirk's assassination.

"Beginning Tuesday night, Sinclair will be preempting Jimmy Kimmel Live! across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming," Sinclair said in a <a href="https://x.com/wearesinclair/status/1970266039532306593?s=46">post</a> on X. "Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show's potential return."

Disney, ABC's parent company, said it decided to bring back the show after speaking extensively with the host, the company <a href="https://www.ntd.com/jimmy-kimmels-show-to-return-to-the-air-disney_1092182.html">said</a> Monday.

"Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country," Disney said in a statement to news outlets. "It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday."

The suspension occurred after remarks Kimmel made during his Sept. 15 live show regarding the suspected assassin of Kirk, who was killed Sept. 10 while speaking at a Utah college campus.

"We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it," Kimmel said during the broadcast.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the suspension resulted from ABC's internal decision rather than Trump administration pressure, Leavitt <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/karoline-leavitt-says-obama-has-no-idea-what-hes-talking-about-after-kimmel-comments.amp">told</a> Fox News's "Saturday in America" on Sept. 20.

"The decision to fire Jimmy Kimmel and to cancel his show came from executives at ABC," Leavitt told the outlet. "It was a decision that was made by ABC because Jimmy Kimmel chose to knowingly lie to his audience on his program about the death of a highly respected man when our country is in a state of mourning."

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr had criticized Kimmel's statements in multiple interviews, suggesting the host was attempting to mislead viewers about the suspect's political affiliations. Prosecutors have said the accused assassin, Tyler Robinson, held left-wing viewpoints.

"This is a very, very serious issue right now for Disney. We can do this the easy way or the hard way," Carr <a href="https://www.theepochtimes.com/us/fcc-head-warns-disney-over-jimmy-kimmels-comments-on-suspect-in-kirk-killing-5916533">told</a> podcaster Benny Johnson on Sept. 17. "These companies can find ways to take action on Kimmel, or there is going to be additional work for the FCC ahead."

Carr noted that ABC faces different regulatory requirements than cable news networks because it broadcasts over public airwaves.

Sinclair initially planned to air a Charlie Kirk remembrance special in place of Kimmel's program, but reversed course and ran "Celebrity Family Feud" while moving the Kirk tribute to YouTube.

"Tonight, Sinclair will continue to air ABC network programming as scheduled in the late-night time period," the company <a href="https://x.com/WeAreSinclair/status/1969241140219039979">said</a> Sept. 19 on X. "The Charlie Kirk special will instead be available on The National News Desk's YouTube channel, ensuring viewers can continue to enjoy ABC programming while also providing full access to the special online."

The suspension was criticized by several viewers, celebrities, politicians, and fellow late-night hosts Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart, who characterized it as censorship from the Trump administration.

President Donald Trump commented on the situation while in the UK, telling reporters Kimmel suffered from "very bad ratings" and was "fired for a lack of talent" in combination with his controversial remarks. Trump also called for NBC to remove Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers from their late-night positions.

"Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC," Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115222372625104790">wrote</a> on Truth Social.

Kirk, a Trump supporter credited with influencing young people toward conservative politics and helping secure Trump's 2024 presidential victory, was assassinated while speaking to students at a college campus in Utah.
