Many of the tens of thousands of Chinese workers in Israel have chosen to stay during the war for various reasons. So here’s a look at some of them sharing their experiences on social media.

“Even if we’re killed by bombs here, we can’t die of poverty in China,” he said.

Workers say they’re putting in 12-hour days on construction sites in Israel and making 5-to-10 times what they would back home in China. That’s highly attractive to Chinese construction workers, who say jobs are hard to come by in China’s sluggish economy.

With so many applicants, a lottery decides who gets to go to Israel. On top of higher salaries, workers say Israeli employers never delay wages, unlike many in China’s construction sector.

One worker also highlighted the freedom he enjoys in Israel.

“Life isn’t just about having enough to eat. We must pursue freedom and live with dignity,” he said.

Another Chinese worker says that after eight years working in Israel, he can now support his family and parents—and even plan for his own retirement.
