S. Martinelli & Company has voluntarily recalled more than 170,000 bottles of its 10-ounce apple juice glass bottles after routine testing revealed the potential presence of a toxic mold byproduct, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The recall, which was first initiated in March, was officially classified as a Class II recall by the FDA on April 22. A Class II recall indicates that using the recalled product could cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” though the risk of serious health effects is considered remote, according to the FDA.
The affected apple juice bottles were produced in December 2023 and distributed in 28 states across the West, South, Midwest, and East Coast, including major markets such as California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, and New York, according to the FDA.
The recall impacts 7,234 cases, with each case containing 24 bottles, packaged as six four-packs of 10-ounce glass bottles featuring a bulbous shape and white metal screw-top lids. The FDA says the juice had potential traces of the mold byproduct patulin.
“In 2024, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) routine testing indicated that one lot of 10-ounce Martinelli’s Apple Juice glass bottles (in 4-packs only) produced in December 2023 may contain elevated levels of Patulin, a naturally occurring substance produced by molds that can grow in apples,” Martinelli’s said in a statement sent to news outlets.
The company did not immediately return a request for comment from NTD.
“At S. Martinelli & Company, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of excellence, and the health and safety of our customers remains our greatest priority,” the company wrote.
No illnesses or adverse health effects have been reported in connection with the recalled apple juice, according to the company. Martinelli’s stated that it has worked with retailers to remove any remaining affected products from store shelves and inventories.
The recalled bottles carry a “best by” date of Dec. 5, 2026, and are marked with UPC number 0 41244 04102 2, which can be found below the product’s barcode, according to the company and the FDA.
