Memorial Day night in Pennsylvania ended with a mass shooting that left two people dead and nine others injured, including three teenagers.
Philadelphia Police from the 9th District responded to the incident in Fairmount Park at 10:27 p.m. on May 26, where they found multiple people wounded in the 800 block of Lemon Hill Drive, according to Philadelphia Police Department spokesperson Miguel Torres.
Memorial Day is a U.S. federal holiday that's typically set aside on the last Monday of the month of May to honor and mourn enlisted Air Force, Navy, and Army personnel who died in service to the country.
At a press conference the morning of May 27, Mayor Cherelle Parker told reporters that there were three shooters.
Amya Devlin, 23, and Mikhail Bowers, 21, were among the deceased who were pronounced dead at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, according to Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel.
The nine wounded who were hospitalized and treated included a 15-year-old boy and two girls, ages 16 and 17. Two men and four women who ranged in age between 18 and 28 were also injured.Bethel, who said there were no arrests, added that police were present in the park at the time of the shooting and that no weapons had been recovered yet. Rapid-fire shots were heard in videos posted on social media.
"As a result of that, I've directed my team to increase our posture in the park," Bethel said at the May 27 press briefing. "Starting this weekend, we'll develop a deployment plan that puts us into the park, not to be going after permits and that type of activity, but more importantly to keep up with the intelligence. Right now, the intelligence coming through our portal is not fast enough. We need to evolve. So, we're going to be putting in a number of different law enforcement assets into the park to identify activity ahead with the hope that we can stave off these activities before they occur."
