Jars of pistachio nut butter sold at Walmart stores in nearly two dozen states have been recalled over concerns they may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The recalled product comes in a 6.7-ounce glass container and features a UPC of 194346207961 and an expiration date of Jan. 28, 2027. The jars can also be identified by the lot number LB028ACP04.
Per the FDA's announcement, no other lots of the Bettergoods nut butter were included in the recall. The affected spread was manufactured by Gustibus Alimentari Srl in Assoro, Italy, and imported into the United States by the New York-based company Botticelli Foods.
The pistachio nut butter was sold exclusively at Walmart stores in 19 states, which include Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington, and Wyoming.
No illnesses or injuries have been reported to date in connection with the recall, the FDA notice states.
The foodborne illness is not usually fatal, but can be more severe in young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. However, the FDA notes that, in rare cases, Salmonella infections can spread to the bloodstream and lead to more serious complications, such as arterial infections, arthritis, and endocarditis, a life-threatening inflammation of the inner lining of the heart's chambers and valves.
No further details were shared about how the three jars of pistachio nut butter initially tested positive for Salmonella or what may have led to the contamination. NTD reached out to Botticelli Foods for more information about the recall, but a response was not received by publication time.
The FDA urged customers who purchased the recalled pistachio nut butter not to consume it and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund instead.
Anyone with questions or concerns about the issue can contact Botticelli Foods directly by emailing [email protected] or calling 631-543-7000, extension 203, during regular business hours.
