Discussion between Rishi Sunak and his Greek counterpart faced a setback, triggering a new dispute concerning the Elgin Marbles. Downing Street stated that the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, had committed not to advocate for the sculptures’ return during his visit to the UK. However, despite this agreement, Mitsotakis expressed his stance on the BBC over the weekend, advocating for the sculptures’ repatriation. Consequently, the prime minister called off the scheduled talks between them.

NTD spoke with Paul Cartledge, professor of Greek culture at Cambridge University and vice chair of the British committee for the reunification of the Parthenon marbles on why he thinks the marbles should be returned to Athens.
