Shen Yun Performing Arts arrived at Australia’s Gold Coast to perform six shows at the Home Of The Arts Theatre from March 13 to 16.

Christine Wilkinson, a classical ballet teacher and former professional ballet dancer, said she resonated with Shen Yun's themes.

“Well, the message behind all of it. It was the message of love and kindness and compassion and doing the right thing, and we need more of that in the world. It was beautiful,” said Christine Wilkinson. “Very dramatic and very heartfelt, and [it] really captivated you in the performance. Yeah, it was beautiful.”

Shen Yun showcases traditional Chinese culture, which people in ancient China believed was inspired by the Divine. Its artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, an art form that has been refined over thousands of years to become one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“The classical Chinese dance was just beautiful, so elegant, and the men were so strong and masculine, and the music was just absolutely beautiful. Loved everything about it,” Ms. Wilkinson added.

“The costuming was amazing, the precision, the movements of the dancers, the choreography, and the screen at the back just made it … took it to a whole other level. I’ve never seen anything like that before.”

Through story-based dances, Shen Yun showcases China’s 5,000-year culture—from ancient myths and legends to modern-day events—displaying values like benevolence, propriety, and righteousness. Audience members said they were moved by a Shen Yun piece set in modern-day China. The story shines a light on the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of faith, which is still happening today.

Zoe Slater, the CEO of Freedom Choice Academy said: “I think that for a lot of people today, they’re wanting to follow their own heart and what’s true for them, and they’re persuaded by governments to give up what they know is right, and the overall message is to stay connected to your spirit and to your culture.”

Nicole Madigan, a journalist for Mamamia said “I think there’s a message of resilience in there and determination to be true to yourself and stick to something you believe in, in the face of all of these things that are going on in the world. Obviously, this was about China in particular, but I think you know everybody can relate to that in some way.”
