Ballroom Dancer Calls Shen Yun ‘Perfection’

SACRAMENTO—Karen Haden, a competitive ballroom dancer was one of many who saw Shen Yun Performing Arts in Sacramento, California, in early February.

“I love the sleeves coming in and out,” Ms. Haden said, describing some of the females’ traditional attire. “I’d like to get a costume like that and try to do something like that.”

“It’s like perfection,” she added. “And the dancing is spectacular.”

Liliana Mihulet, owner of Flame and Fire Brazilian Steakhouse, also praised the visuals and the experience.

“I haven’t seen anything like it. The performance was amazing,” Mrs. Mihulet said.

Richard Myers, owner of R. Myers Co., said Shen Yun was “very, very good.”

“I was highly impressed. Not just with the performers, but the orchestra was awesome,” Mr. Myers said.

The owner of Peralta Cleaning, Douglas Frisbie, said his first reaction to seeing the performers was that “they must do a lot of stretching.”

“Their form and their ability to coordinate with each other was incredible,” Mr. Frisbie said.

“Magnificent performance,” said Bob Scheetz, founder of Petroleum Chemicals. “I enjoyed the acrobatics, and the music. That was different for me.”

Since its inception in 2006, the New York-based Shen Yun has a mission to revive traditional Chinese culture.

“Even though it’s a culture on the other side of the world, there’s also a lot of similarities in the things that drive people in terms of love, service, respect for elders,” said Kit Joos, a physician.

“I just like the stories through dance,” Mr. Joos said.

Natalie Charrette, principal at Bay Christian School, said she enjoyed the “moral message of kindness, and just being a good person, and how beautiful that is in society.”

Ancient Chinese civilization was divinely inspired—this culture was almost lost during China’s Cultural Revolution.

“I noted that this is not available in China,” said Carol Long, president of C-ARC Enterprises.

“That is a very sad thing. I’ve been to China on a couple of occasions, and it’s sad because everyone needs to fully engage and understand the theory, the story behind this,” Mrs. Long said.

Mark Zoeller, a management consultant with Deloitte, said he was touched by the portrayal of faith and persecution.

“We’re all living in it today, and it was plain to see that, but definitely the message of faith and hope I think was what resonated most with me,” Mr. Zoeller said.

Leslie Plettner, founder of E Spring LLC, said she felt physically touched by the show.

“There were times when energy was just moving through my body,” Ms. Plettner said.

“I was just really inspired by the message of resiliency, the message of forgiveness, the message of meditation and sitting quiet and finding the divine and the sacred within,” she added.

“Bringing the divine back to the human culture. I love that,” Ms. Haden said.

Mr. Meyers said he would strongly suggest the performance to others.

“I’m going to tell my friends about it. I’m going to tell everybody,” he said.
