On April 15, Canadian member of parliament for Calgary Heritage Shuv Majumdar attended a performance by Shen Yun Performing Arts at Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. Following the performance, Mr. Majumdar presented a congratulatory letter to the organizers and artists of Shen Yun on site.

“This time, I'm reminded that it's been just over a quarter century of communist persecution against the idea of moral virtue, that there is right and that there is wrong and that good is represented through the beauty of inner art, and what we see today is a beautiful demonstration of artists who have had extraordinary discipline maintaining tradition beauty and selling and telling a story of how there is no government powerful enough to suppress the indomitable human spirit. So I'm very grateful to be back this year and to see such beautiful art on such a wonderful display,” Mr. Majumdar said.

As Mr. Majumdar watched the performance, he was deeply moved and reminded that the human spirit is indomitable and no government can suppress the moral virtue and the beauty of inner art.

“I'm deeply moved. I am always stunned at how beautiful and brilliant the human spirit can be, no matter how hard or how heavy the gathering darkness has been. And in this time, in this era, that promise of freedom, that promise of liberty, that promise of good, is one that we need to connect even more with. And so I feel deeply moved and deeply inspired by what I saw today.”

“Our country is one of the oldest democracies on planet Earth, and one of the things that weaves our nation together is a profound sense of freedom and freedom that is exercised with great responsibility,” Majumdar said. “We value religious freedom in this country. We know that for over a quarter century in Beijing, there have been, there's been an attempt to persecute people of all faiths, including the Falun Dafa, and that's wrong. It's about being able to give people the freedom that they deserve, that is inscribed in their heart, to believe what they wish, to thrive in that belief, and to share that in peace with everybody.”

In addition to China’s ancient culture and divinity, Shen Yun also presents stories of modern-day courage by people of faith. Those stories focus on practitioners of a traditional Chinese meditation system for the mind and body called Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa. But for the last 25 years, it’s been persecuted by the communist party. Practitioners are being imprisoned, tortured to death, and are even having their organs removed while they are still alive. Because of its efforts to expose those abuses, Shen Yun is prohibited from performing inside China.

“Anywhere in the world, when you see the Chinese diaspora in Canada and anywhere else, you see them thriving and succeeding almost disproportionately so. The traditional values of the Chinese people have far eclipsed any communist regime that tries to suppress it. ... The truth is, we saw what the Chinese people can do when given an opportunity to breathe and to animate life with art and with science and creativity and nobility. And so the message is powerful that this cultural tradition of the Chinese people is one that enriches our Canadian life and one that will long outlast whatever tyranny in Beijing has existed, especially,” Mr. Majumdar said.

“Congratulations to the artists, designers, the musicians. Congratulations the kind of work that goes into making such a beautiful production like this was evident today. Stay strong, as there are those who are trying to undo who you are and what you present to the world. Stay strong and continue to be a source of beauty and light in a world that has grave and gathering darkness everywhere. Thank you very much for the work that you've done,” Mr. Majumdar said.
