Chinese Entrepreneur Hails Shen Yun as a 'Great Achievement'

Shen Yun Performing Arts is back in New York City’s Lincoln Center this season, drawing audiences from across the Chinese community. Many say the performance not only showcases world-class artistry, but also revives traditional Chinese culture, something they say was lost under communist rule in China today.

Liren Hu, an entrepreneur, said, “This performance is among the very best in the world. I haven’t met the artistic director of Shen Yun in person, but from a purely artistic perspective, I believe he has cultivated a great many artists, and each one can be considered world-class.”

“Many Broadway productions nowadays have stopped running because they can’t sustain themselves. But Shen Yun, over the past 20 years, has grown from one company to eight, and every show I’ve seen has been sold out,” said Dong Lu, a former spokesperson with the Christian Democratic Party of China.

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture from before communism. The company also tells stories of modern-day courage by practitioners of a traditional Chinese meditation practice —Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, which has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999. For these reasons, Shen Yun cannot perform in China.

Mingzhou De, a Chinese national, said, “This is truly regrettable. China has so many beautiful traditional cultural elements that are deeply moving. But under this kind of authoritarian rule today, many of those traditions have been lost. And for the Chinese people, that is a great pity.”

Hairong Du, a lawyer, said, “Especially when we see the issue of forced organ harvesting by the Chinese Communist Party, this is something that is truly happening to people like us. Our children, our students—even middle school and elementary school students—have become sources of organs for senior officials. It is truly inhumane.”

Mr. Hu said, “This performance truly embodies the essence of Chinese culture and the essence of Chinese art. It showcases many aspects of China and helps the world better understand traditional Chinese culture. What we see in today’s Chinese society has largely been broken, and these traditions are no longer visible. But through Shen Yun, I was able to see and understand traditional Chinese culture again. I think this is a great achievement.”

Shuangqing Liu, a Chinese immigrant, said, “I hope more Chinese people, especially those from mainland China, can come and see Shen Yun and soon clear up their misunderstandings about Falun Gong. Because of the Chinese Communist Party’s propaganda, people’s eyes have been misled, and they are not told the truth, which has led to deep misunderstandings. I believe that as long as you watch Shen Yun once, or learn more about Falun Gong, these misunderstandings can be resolved.”

Yufan Ni, the Washington, D.C. representative for the China Democracy Party, said, “I think I will share what I’ve seen and felt, as well as everything I personally experienced, including all the artistic elements I witnessed, and let everyone know about it, including people in mainland China. I want them to understand that Falun Gong, Shen Yun Performing Arts, and its performances are not what the Chinese Communist Party portrays them to be. They are completely different.”

Mr. Hu said, “I feel that I am fortunate to be here today, so I will come to see Shen Yun every year from now on. I will keep coming back to enjoy it. I would like to pay tribute to every Shen Yun artist and to all the staff who work behind the scenes and dedicate themselves to the production. I want to thank them.”
