On April 9, Shen Yun Performing Arts showcased the spirit of ancient Chinese civilization through classical Chinese dance, music, and storytelling in Dortmund, Germany. Audience members welcomed the company with warm applause and were captivated by the artistry.

“The interaction with the stage design, the way the dancers go back and then suddenly practically disappear into the stage design, and then it continues with a story being told. That was so fantastic. You were always following along, you knew what it was about. It wasn’t just dancing alone, but a real story with a plot. I thought that was so great, it was so fascinating,” said Gabi Niggemeier, an actress.

“I liked [the performance] very much. I liked the singer best,” said Maxim Siemens, a business owner. “The way she sang, I thought that was really great. I thought the way she hit the notes was great.”

“It’s very impressive. The costumes, I liked it all very, very much. It excites me very much,” said Ute Weißkirchen, an architect.

“I thought the music was very beautiful. Especially when we also got to hear traditional Chinese music. And what we also really liked was when we could read along on the screen what the song was about,” said Mehmet Gürenc, a business owner.

Shen Yun aims to revive the spirit of 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture, a heritage believed by ancient Chinese people to be a gift from the Divine. Audiences praised Shen Yun for bringing these values to life on stage.

“A certain lightness. Life is always difficult, but if you have faith and hope, you rediscover the lightness of life. That you interact with your environment completely differently,” Ms. Niggemeier said.

“Joy and peace was also communicated. That gave me a lot of peace and a lot of inspiration,” Ms. Weißkirchen said.

“There was a lot about social and societal aspects, but also about the ancient art of the Chinese, whether it’s meditation or healthcare. And that was interesting for us to take along and see, experience, and to feel,” Mr. Gürenc said. “It hits you directly in the heart, but also in your emotions. Emotions are in your heart, but also in your thoughts. And it’s a little different from German literature or German poetry and music. There’s a different lightness to it.”

Shen Yun will be performing in Paris, France, from April 16 through May 11.
