Shen Yun Performing Arts showcased the spirit of ancient Chinese civilization at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center in Charleston, South Carolina, on April 19, touching the hearts of many audience members.

“It’s inspiring. I think they were very inspiring in their performance,” said Carolyn Fordyce, a former nonprofit executive director.

“I loved it, every bit of it. First off, I loved the costumes. I loved all the colors. It was so beautiful," she said. "And secondly, the dancing was incredible. They jumped so high, they flipped, they twirl around, so incredible. It was exciting to watch.”

Andrew Doris, a physician, also shared his appreciation of the performance.

“What’s amazing is the stuff they’re doing is incredible, but they make it look easy because they are so artistic in their execution,” said Dr. Doris. “It’s uplifting to see the beauty and the emotion and the reverence for tradition.”

Jeffrey Rumpf, a meteorologist, said that the costumes were just spectacular. "The storytelling was fantastic and interesting and engaging," he added.

"The interaction between the dancers and the background was surprising and really helped with the storytelling,” said Mr. Rumpf. “I felt like I was on cloud nine watching the performance.”

Since 2006, Shen Yun has toured the world with a mission to revive 5,000 years of divinely inspired traditional Chinese culture and values, which have been under threat since the Chinese Communist Party took power in 1949. The regime has sought to destroy Chinese society’s deeply-rooted belief in the Divine.

“It’s beautiful, the way they kept bringing in the moon fairies and the other powerful deities and their impact on our lives. It was magical and captivating,” said Dr. Doris. “Whichever belief system you follow, belief systems in a higher good to guide us all, I think, is a very valuable tradition to uphold.”

The world’s premier classical Chinese dance company aims to share with audiences the beauty of China before communism.

“Not that we know so much, but we knew about the communism, we knew about the hardship, we knew about the sadness that took place in China of all the years gone by and the performances today was so beautiful, and I thought it was touching,” said Ms. Fordyce.

“The amount of time and effort, and then the commitment to long term, to be doing this, to try to present a performance that is not only engaging, but educational and inspiring,” said Mr. Rumpf.

Shen Yun successfully concluded its 2025 world tour, with performances across major cities worldwide on May 11. Every season, Shen Yun brings an all-new program for audiences to enjoy.
