STAMFORD, Conn.—Shen Yun Performing Arts captivated audiences at the Palace Theatre in Stamford on May 8, presenting a performance of classical Chinese dance and music inspired by 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.

Audience members described the production as visually stunning and emotionally moving, praising its storytelling, choreography, and orchestral music.

“It’s really amazing. It was incredible,” John Taylor, a regional director of sales, said.

Roberta Gavlik, a senior consumer relations marketing professional, said the performance combined artistic beauty with meaningful storytelling.

“It was spectacular,” he said. “I just thought the storytelling was amazing, the dance, the costumes, the colors. It was really beautiful. It was very experiential, visually and through the storytelling and the music.”

“It’s visually completely amazing, and I’m sure technically impeccable,” physician Michael Duben said. “So it’s just a perfect combination. You rarely see it in art.”

Nick Gerrity, a marketing manager who attended the performance with his girlfriend Stephanie, said he appreciated Shen Yun’s presentation of traditional Chinese culture.

“I think it’s great that they’re bringing it over here to the United States and showing everyone what the traditional culture of China is,” Mr. Gerrity said. “I think it’s beautiful.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun’s mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture from before the communist era through classical Chinese dance and music.

Audience members said the performance also offered historical and cultural insights.

“I learned a lot from it,” Ms. Gavlik said. “Through the stories and knowing the background from the hosts, that gave some more insights into the history and helped enhance the numbers. It was a learning experience, for sure.”

“It’s inspirational and it’s pure, and it is entertaining,” scientist Rick Keen said. “I’d recommend every American should understand, should see it and understand more about it.”

Rudolph Sanchez, a sales manager who attended with his mother, Ester, said the performance’s message resonated emotionally.

“If you understand it with the heart, you can understand what the whole idea is and what the whole message is,” Mr. Sanchez said.

“I think it just made me feel lighter, fresh, reborn—a lot of energy,” Sankarasubramanian Palamadai, a senior director, said. “That’s what I felt.”

He also encouraged others to attend the show.

“Please come and watch it,” he said. “Encourage the artists. They did an amazing job and I hope everybody gets to see the show.”

Mr. Sanchez said the emotional impact of the performance extended to his family members as well.

“I definitely recommend it. You need to come and see it,” he said. “I brought my wife from Colombia. I brought my mother, my stepmother, because I felt that they needed to come and see it and enjoy it. They did, actually. All three of them cried because they felt how important the message was.”

Shen Yun has concluded the U.S. leg of its 2026 world tour and will return to Toronto, Canada, on June 25 for a series of five performances.
